Treble Charger - Phoenix Concert Theatre, Toronto - Wednesday, March 21, 2012 Canadian Music Week 2012

Found a awesome review of Phoenix concert. Treble Charger talk about making new music. The Royal York Hotel was buzzing with excitement Wednesday evening as the citywide celebration of live entertainment that is Canadian Music Week kicked off its 30th year. Like always, the five-day schedule of performances featured hundreds upon hundreds of major and indie acts, including local favourites, foreign acts, a handful of rock ‘n roll legends, and the odd reunion or comeback, which tend to be among the most anticipated shows of the festival. Nostalgia was in the air Wednesday night as Phoenix filled with fans of local 90s rock icons, Treble Charger, for their very first live show in over nine years. It was one of two shows they would play during CMW; the other being at the Indie Awards where they would be inducted into the Indie Hall of Fame. I showed up at Phoenix just in time to catch openers Teenage Kicks, a young indie band with a classic rock feel, fronted by vocalist Peter Van Helvoort whose presence reminded me of the famous footage of Joe Cocker performing at Woodstock. The spirited vibe coming off the stage really defined their sound for me – definitely a band whose live show completes the package. I remember discovering Treble Charger via Much Music, where their music video for “American Psycho” was on heavy rotation and Youtube had yet to exist. For years to come, the band’s singles landed on every one of my burnt mix CDs (remember those?). Yep, the world was a very different place when Treble Charger was at the top of the music game, but it was obvious that the band was all but forgotten. “So we meet again!” Greig addresses the crowd of screaming fans before launching into a selection of hits off various past albums. He would speak affectionately several times, obviously thrilled to be back on stage and seemingly humbled by the turnout. In a later interview, Greig admitted it felt great to still be adored by so many people and that he was pleasantly surprised to see younger fans in the audience. The feeling was surely mutual, as mosh pits formed and fans screamed their approval of every song. One fan was so impressively into it, he was brought on stage to demonstrate his moves. The 90-minute show – their longest to date – carried on in true 90s rock fashion: no fancy frills, no light shows or massive self-promoting banners; instead, Treble Charger’s gimmick is to play straight up rock ‘n roll without any gimmicks, reminding us that this high-status band is, at its roots, still a beloved local indie act that hasn’t lost its identity in this eccentric musical climate. It was unknown whether the band would continue to tour following the CMW performances, but things are looking positive for Treble Charger fans. “We’re being coy about the future,” says Bill, but Greig divulges that a couple of summertime appearances are in order. As for whether the band will be releasing new material, the two agree, “One step at a time”.
